She is the love of your life, your perfect match. You can’t wait to start your life together. You’ve planned everything out just right – from the flowers to the champagne to the words you will say to her. It’s going to be such a special, romantic proposal; you’re both going to remember it for as long as you live.

With all the careful work and preparation you’ve gone through, you want to make sure that you choose the key ingredient – the ring – with just as much care. It has to be just as special as she is. An engagement ring is a symbol of your undying love and devotion; it also shows what she means to you, and you want the ring to reflect that. Here are some tips that will help you find the perfect ring!

Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat – These are the first things you want to look for if you’re choosing to give a diamond engagement ring. Carat is the weight of the diamond (often reflects how large it is). If you reduce the weight by up to 10% you can save some money but the reduction of the size really isn’t noticeable much (for example instead of exactly 1.5ct diamond you can go with 1.4ct or 1.35ct one to save some money).

The cut of the diamond is vital – if it is bad, the diamond will appear dull instead of brilliant. The Cut is determined by many things including the depth and width, as well as the symmetry and polish. Go with at least “Good” cut as anything below will indicate low value and not good looking diamond. Unless you’re willing to pay for a flawless diamond, many diamonds will have some sort of flaw. You want to make sure the flaws are not able to be seen unless magnified.

The Color of the diamond is based on a couple of things. For one, there are diamonds that are colored – from yellow to pink to blue and green. For another, there are quite a few diamonds that have a slight yellowish hue to them. This isn’t always noticeable, and it can be less noticeable if the diamond is placed in the right setting. H color diamonds provide the best values as their color is nice and white and they are not as expensive comparatively to higher colors. If your budget allows you can go with better colors such G, F, E and D which is the highest color, but be prepared to pay a premium price for those.

A high Clarity diamond will appear flawless and will have a brilliance she will constantly admire! Unless you’re willing to pay for a flawless diamond, many diamonds will have some sort of flaw. You want to make sure the flaws are not able to be seen unless magnified for this we suggest to select at least SI quality diamond or even VS which will look very nice and will not have any inclusions visible to the naked eye.  Again, if your budget allows you can go for higher clarity diamond such as VVS or even FL (flawless) but again, be prepared to pay a huge premium as these diamonds are very rare and hence very expensive.

Style – She is going to be wearing this ring forever; make sure you know what kind of style she likes – classy and elegant, or more trendy and hip, slim and delicate or oversized and even gaudy. If you are not sure ask a trusted friend who can keep a secret and who knows your beloved’s style well enough to help you out.

Jeweler Reputation – Make sure you go to a jeweler with a great reputation. It would be a good idea to make sure the lab that the jeweler works with has a good reputation as well. Some labs have lower standards and some jewelers have been known to offer sub-par quality diamonds at a higher price.
