Choosing Arrows for Hunting

There are many important factors when choosing what arrows to use for bowhunting. Having the right arrow is very important. Deciding what arrow to use will depend on the type of game you are going for, the type of bow you are using, and the draw length of your bow. If you have been taking archery lessons in Houston, or wherever you might live, and you are ready to get out and try bowhunting you will need to bring the right type of arrows.

Arrow Points

The type of game you are going after will make the most difference to the type of arrowheads you want to use. In Texas, you must use broadhead points for all hunting. The broadhead must be at least 7/8 of an inch across, and it must have at least two cutting edges. Mechanical broadheads may be used as well. The blades of mechanical broadheads start out closed, and open upon impact. This makes them somewhat easier to store in a quiver, and protects the edges until they are needed. If you are going for smaller game such as turkey, there is a higher chance of your arrows going into the ground. In that case you probably would not want to use expensive high-tech points.

Arrow Shafts

The power of your bow will make the most difference to the type of shafts that you will want to use. Wood and fiberglass shafts are really only suitable for lower draw weight bows. The sudden force of a more powerful bow could cause the shaft to break on a wooden or fiberglass arrow before it even leaves the bow. This could lead to terrible injuries. If your bow has a draw weight of 50 pounds or more, aluminum or carbon shafts are what you will want to use. Aluminum or carbon shafts can stand up to the force of higher-powered bows.

Length

The length of your arrows will depend on your draw length. This, of course, will be different for everyone depending on their body size. Your bow should have a draw length to fit your body. The length of your arrows should be about 2 inches longer than your draw length. You do not want very much of the shaft extending out past the arrow rest when you draw. Having arrows that are too long will cause the arrow to be off balance when you release the string. If that happens, your arrows will not fly properly.
