If you are worried about the effects a traffic violation can have on your car insurance rates, a new study’s results can help to put your mind at ease. According to this study, most drivers don’t pay more for coverage after getting a ticket.
Only about 30% of people getting a ticket during the last five years saw a rate increase, and most were less than $100 per year.
Younger drivers were more likely to see a rate increase; 41% of drivers ages 18 to 29 paid more after a violation.
Drivers with a history of violations, or reckless driving and DUI usually got higher premiums. The actual increase depended on the state in which the policy was issued, the insurer, and the driver’s record.
How to Avoid Increases
If you have one minor traffic violation, there are steps you can take to avoid rate increases. Avoid getting any additional tickets, take a defensive driving or traffic safety course, and be sure to keep your license, inspection and registration current.
Some US states have traffic infraction ‘forgiveness’ rules in place. For instance, in New Jersey, insurance carriers cannot raise rates for the first minor (2 point) speeding ticket. Some insurers forgive minor traffic violations for drivers with otherwise spotless driving records. Some companies forgive one minor ticket every three years, and others offer the protection as an optional clause on all insurance policies.
