Music is the Universal Language

Have you ever wondered why your children, regardless of their age seem to be able to memorize every word of every popular song? Most parents have and most also ask why school lessons are not set to music, if the child can learn a set of lyrics in a day just think what they could do with their school subjects.

Although it may not be as apparent, young children are also impacted directly with music. When a child is five or six years of age they absorb everything that comes there way, they have not yet figured out what is important and what can be discarded. As the child gets older that’s when they develop the ability to separate the “wheat from the chafe.” It is this ability in young children that makes personalized children’s music so important for their continued development.

Music is the universal teaching medium. Although there are maybe five or six thousand languages and dialects in the world, there is only one that is understood by everyone, and that is music. It makes no difference at all what the music is or what culture it represents, it is instantly understood.

One reason why personalized children’s music is such a wonderful learning tool is the fact that music is naturally repetitive, the lyrics and notes are played time after time during the song. The child stills hears the music as something that they enjoy but little do they realize that this repetition is what teaches them.

A great deal of research has been done and it continues on how music affects the brain. It has been concluded that music more than anything activates more parts of the brain. The studies that are being conducted on children indicate that the test results that they get when content is set to music are higher than when music is not involved in the process. It appears that learning is enhanced because of the engaging feature of music.

As many children’s songs are set to rhyming lyrics; the child hears and begins to recognize the sounds within a word, they begin to take notice of the same sounds in other words, in this way phonic awareness is greatly enhanced. It is also known that repetition is one of the keys to fluency and music makes repeated practice enjoyable.
