Tips on unclogging a drain

There are many things that require urgent attention, none as urgent as attending to a clogged drain in your house. No matter what you may be doing at the time, you will end up dropping it in favor of getting out the plunger before your floors are flooded with dirty water and waste. Depending on the clog and the position of it in the system you may end up calling plumbers in Suffolk County to repair it, but there are a few tips that may save you the call.

If the clog is in one of the sunk or basin drains the first thing to try is boiling water. Sink drains are notorious for being clogged with grease, soap scum, hair, etc, and often boiling water will melt it down to the point where it will move. It is worth a try but a word to the wise; only use boiling water if your pipes are metal. PVC pipes can begin to melt if the temperature gets too high, if you don’t know what your drain pipes are made from just use the hottest tap water you can get.

Although there are many commercial drain cleaners, some of them are not environmentally friendly. If you know the clog is from grease then you can make a very effective cleaner yourself. Take a half cup of baking soda and pour it into the drain, try to get it down as far as possible. Pour a liberal dose of vinegar into the drain and it will begin to work. As you want the action to be in the drain and not all over the sink, cover the drain so the mixture cannot rise up. Once the fizzing action has died down, give it another dose of vinegar, wait about 30 minutes and flush will clear water.

A household plunger comes in handy for clogged drains. As the drain system must be closed and have standing water to work properly, if your sink has an overflow, plug it or put a strip of tape over it. Make sure there is standing water and push the plunger. The tape or plug will force the air into the head of the clog.

If these simple methods fail then the next step is to snake the drain, this is really a job that should be left to the plumbers in Suffolk County.
