What should I put in my Will, or rather Who should I?

Thinking about our will is not something we often feel too fond of. After all it does tend to remind us of our own mortality and there are some people who are so superstitious, that they feel that thinking about it is tempting fate a little too much. However, unless we have absolutely nothing of any value to leave to anyone—including personal mementoes—there is every reason to make a will. A will—or Last Will and Testament—is a legalized document that nominates certain people to receive all or part of an estate upon the death of its owner.

In making a Will you must be of sound mind and of majority age—for example, old enough to vote—and if you qualify as both you can either draft your own will or have a solicitor to do it for you. No country’s law states that a will has to be drawn up by a solicitor or lawyer, but many people choose to have a lawyer or solicitor as their executor, to ensure the will is carried out to the details after their death.

What and Who Goes in it?

It is probably a good idea that if a person has a complex estate and plenty money or assets that they take the solid precaution of having a solicitor draw up a will to make sure it is thoroughly done. Who gets what from your estate is really up to you. If you have a favorite friend or relative you can leave them some or all of it, along with other designated recipients. You can choose how to distribute it all to a charity or organization if you like, too. Contests can be made but they very rarely win if the will can be proven to have been sound.

A will should always be signed by the testator and generally witnessed in a legal setting too, but there are some instances where a witness is not required. During the making of the will the testator should verbally revoke any and all previously made wills in Reading, just in case there is a contest. They should also announce the date of the will and verbally state they are of sound mind at the time of making the will.
