Individual Wastewater Systems
An IWS is a system that removes wastewater from a home or business, treats it to remove harmful components, and then releases it into the ground. If these systems are designed well and properly maintained they are a very environmentally friendly way to deal with wastewater.
Aerobic Treatment Units
ATUs are a special type of IWS system. These systems use aerobic bacteria to process the wastewater. Aerobic bacteria naturally exist in lakes, streams, and many other places on earth. They survive on waste from other creatures and their application to human wastewater is based on the same principles. The environment within a septic tank is optimal for the proliferation of this bacteria. They naturally clean wastewater so that it can be returned to the ground.
How Aerobic Treatment Units Actually Work
Wastewater enters the unit through an inlet pipe where the aerator mixes the water with air bubbles. This creates a sludge type mixture of air bubbles, water and contaminates. The bacteria will consume the contaminates, make the water clear and odorless and send it back into the ground. Usually, all of the sludge is not cleaned by the bacteria every time new wastewater comes in. This sludge can buildup and cause problems. These units should be cleaned out periodically, about as often as you would have a traditional septic system cleaned.
