Answers About Immunization Shots

Being informed and educated allows you to be an active participant in your health care. Immunization Shots can be a heated topic of discussion in today’s world and you may not feel comfortable asking questions for fear of starting a debate. Some common questions arise when discussing immunizations.

*     Why should I immunize? Some diseases are becoming very rare in the US, but it is still worthwhile to keep vaccinating. People from other countries that visit the US may not have the same vaccinations that we do and can carry diseases with them when they visit here. There are also populations of people who cannot for medical reasons receive vaccinations. So, even though these diseases have been drastically reduced in our country, there is still a chance that one could contract one of theses illnesses.

*     How often does my child get shots? The CDC has a recommended schedule that is designed to protect infants and children early in life. Most people follow this schedule. There are others that follow a delayed schedule and choose to not receive multiple vaccinations at one visit, but rather spread them out over a period of time. So, how often you will need to go should be discussed with your health care provider when you decide which schedule you are going to follow.

*     Where do I go to receive my Immunization Shots? You can receive immunizations at your regular doctor’s office. Many walk-in clinics, such as Midwest Express Clinic, provide immunizations as well. A walk-in clinic may be a better option for a variety of reasons. Convenience is a major factor as walk-in clinics do not require appointments. With today’s hectic schedules this is a plus for many working parents. Clinics also have extended hours and are often open seven days a week. A child that has recently been ill or has a fever should not receive immunizations as their immune system is already weakened. Receiving the shots at a walk-in clinic would avoid having to reschedule with your physicians office and possibly avoid broken appointment fees.

*   Are immunizations just for children? No, there are also shots that adults often receive such as immunizations for the flu or shingles.

By visiting your doctor or local walk-in clinic you can receive additional information regarding these important procedures and which immunizations might be right for you.
