CNC Precision Milling in the 21st Century and Beyond

by | Sep 2, 2016 | CNC Machine Shop

Wouldn’t it be great to own a crystal ball or some method of gazing into the future? You could see what CNC precision milling is going to be like so you can make the right investments and choices along the way. Yet, sadly there is no reliable method for future gazing but by using a little imagination and information, we can lift the veil of the future a little and take a quick peak underneath. Here are some of the things which might occur with CNC technology in the coming years.

Continued Automation

Look for smaller to midsize businesses turning to the benefits of CNC precision milling instead of manual operations. Although small shops may still perform machining manually, more and more are realizing the benefits of automation. However, this can present a problem to businesses with limited budgets. Yet, thanks to contract manufacturing companies, even the smallest of shops can outsource the precision work they need and still make a profit. In fact, this may be the best option for many shops in the future.

Increased Quality

As computer numeric control becomes commonplace, it should raise quality standards considerably. After all, CNC precision milling and machining is creating high tolerance parts and with great precision and accuracy. As the process continues to evolve it should be able to handle jobs in the next decade, which were once thought impossible.

3D Printing

The technology of actually printing parts and components is something of science fiction, but in the future it could become science fact. 3D printing will become less expensive over time and more effective. However, it could be a long time before the process overtakes CNC machining. It may be very good for creating some kinds of prototypes, but as far as high tolerance precision work, there is no substitute for a skilled machinist working with high tech equipment.

CNC Comes to the Home Shop

Although it could still be several years away, you may eventually see CNC machines in the home work shop. Yet, it could be quite some time before prices drop enough and technology simplifies operation. However, in time the home enthusiast will have more accurate and dependable tools to work with. Yet, don’t look for everyday people to be turning out high quality CNC precision milling and parts in the 21st Century. This takes a great deal of skill and the best possible equipment. In addition, it requires years of experience in the machining industry to develop a working relationship with customers and provide everything they need. In other words, if you work in the CNC machining industry, you may have competition in the future, but there should still be a high demand for products and services.
