Differential pressure simply means measuring the difference between the pressure in two things or areas. It helps to determine important factors like flow rate. In fact, many businesses like the oil industry depend on flow rates for efficiency and they utilize DP flow methods.
How Does DP Flow Work?
This kind of system works with two elements. One is the primary, and the other is called the secondary element. The primary element is installed in a pipe to create a differential pressure. The secondary element acts as the transmitter, and it receives readings from the primary element inside the pipe, which it then transmits to a meter.
The secondary element takes this mechanical info and changes it to digital data (transduction), and this is why it is also a called a differential pressure transducer. To create digital data, the data must be changed from mechanical to electronic.
How does the primary element create a difference in pressure? This can be done in several ways, but one of the most common methods is a hole or holes which restrict the flow in one direction. This will increase pressure on the way in, and decrease it in the other direction.
Not long ago, monitoring differential pressure in some systems could be expensive and involve a lot of maintenance. Special piping with valves had to run from the primary unit to the secondary element. However, thanks to modern technology, this has changed. Modern differential pressure monitoring devices are made so the secondary element attaches directly to the primary element. Piping is internal and not only saves space but cost too.
Uses for Differential Pressure Measuring
You’ll see DP monitoring devices in many different commercial and domestic applications. They are used to measure flow, viscosity, level, temperature and density. Here are some of the applications:
