You’re probably heard of the Freshman 15. Let me tell you, it’s no joke. For me it was more like the Freshman 20. Sure, part of this is just the natural weight gain you get at this age, but part of it is changes in diet, exercise and lifestyle. The good news is that it is possible to be a fit and healthy student when at college. Here’s how.
- Watch your Diet
When you don’t have a parent watching over you, the temptation to eat food that tastes good but is bad for you is pretty strong. Be aware that you still need to eat a healthy, balanced diet, even when cramming for midterms. - Take Time for Exercise
Now that you’re at school, your life has an entirely new routine. Make sure to include exercise in that routine. Once you’ve got your class schedule, figure out when the best times for workouts will be, and schedule them in, too. This will give you the structure to include fitness in your life. Talk to the trainers at Max Challenge in Boca Raton for the best advice on fitting exercise into your life. - Sleep Matters
An often overlooked part of a healthy lifestyle is sleep. There’s so many pitfalls in college, from late night parties to cramming for exams to part-time jobs, that can disrupt your sleep. Guard your sleep jealously. Make sure you get at least 6 hours a night. Whatever you’re doing, make sure you get the sleep you need to be at your best. - Don’t Try to do to Much
There’s so many fun things to do on campus, and a lot of freshmen try to do them all. A better approach is to be mindful of your schedule, and focus on the things you want to do the most. This will save you the time and energy you need for your coursework, for exercise, and for a good night’s sleep.Starting college is one of the most exciting times of your life. It’s hard not to get swept up in everything. But you can be a fit and healthy student when at college with just a little bit of thought and planning.
