Transfer Case: Function And Types

by | Jan 13, 2014 | Autos

If you drive a four-wheel vehicle, you have a transfer case. The same applies if your car or truck has all-wheel drive. This mechanical device is a fundamental part of vehicles of this nature. Without it, it would not be able to perform as its owners expect it to.
What is a Transfer Case?

A transfer case is a specific type of equipment that sits, mounted just behind the transmission. It connects the transmission to the front and rear axles of a vehicle. To accomplish this it uses drive shafts. The focus on gears results in several nicknames including the transfer gearbox. The transfer gearcase, the transfer box or the T-case. The T-case is also called the jockey box, perhaps because it does jockey power around to make four or two-wheel drive possible. However, it must be noted, the transfer case does not always contain gears. It may be the repository for a chain drive system instead.

Function

The purpose or function of the transfer case is to distribute the power of the transmission from it to the axles and, therefore the wheels of any vehicle. Typically, it has the capability to allow a vehicle/driver to shift from a normal two-wheel drive into four-wheel drive. This can be four-wheel drive in low, neutral or high range. What drive mode is in play is a direct function of the transfer case.

In two-wheel drive, for example, the power is directed by the T-case to the rear axle. If four-wheel drive is activated, the transfer case makes sure all axles receive the same power. This means someone driving a vehicle in four-wheel drive off road or on difficult stretches of highway is exerting the same power on both sets of axles and therefore, wheels. This will provide greater control resulting in increased traction when required.

The function of transfer cases in such instances is to improve the safety of operating a vehicle in difficult conditions. This includes poor weather conditions such as slick or icy roads. Drivers in snowy climates or rainy ones can benefit from having four-wheeled drive.

Types of Transfer Cases

When it comes to distinguishing different types of transfer cases, you need to be aware there are three basic ones. These systems are divided according to their mode of operation. They are:

* Part-time

* Full-time

* Multi-mode

You can select high and low gear in all three of these systems. What type you decide upon depends upon the vehicle you choose and your personal preference. In any case, no mode of four-wheel or all-wheel transportation is possible without that essential device – the transfer case.
