Are you thinking of applying for an art program, but not sure what type of art you most enjoy? Maybe there is a new form of art out there that you have yet to try. Are you a graphic designer or do you enjoy fine art? Whether you are a graphic designer or a fine artist, you may want to try taking some printmaking courses. The best Printmaking programs can provide you with a wider variety of skills to add to your resume. If you have never taken a Printmaking course, it is a course consisting of graphic design elements. You can create a print from an original surface which is termed a “matrix” or “plate.” There are many categories in which Printmaking can be categorized, and a few of these categories are listed below.

Relief

You can incise areas on your surface that will not be printed and roll ink over the other areas. You can etch designs into the surface as well.

Drypoint

If you scratch on your hard surface with a metal object such as sharp metal or a diamond, you can create a line on paper that looks almost velvety.

Etching

You can cover a plate with a substance resistant to acid, and draw images on the plate with your sharp metal tools. You can then cover your plate with ground and put the plate into a bath of acid, so that the layer of grounding you put on is carved out of the plate. If you want deeper lines, you can leave the plate in the acid for a longer period of time.

Mezzotint

The mezzotint technique can provide a great tonal effect if you use a rocker to make the surface of the plate rougher.

Screen Printing

Ink can be squeezed with a squeegee to your surface to create a piece of art.
