When You Decide to Forgo Curative Care

by | Jan 14, 2015 | Nursing Home

There comes a point in some people’s lives when they decide to Forgo Curative Care for one reason or another. They may have gone through chemotherapy once and don’t want to do that again, or they have lost so much weight that their bodies won’t withstand any more procedures. They may have been given a diagnosis of 6 months of life left. Whatever the reason, they need alternatives to curative care. Palliative and hospice care provide alternatives to patients who want to die with dignity and not live out their last months in a hospital. They want to be home, whatever setting home may be, and they want to be comfortable.

Home can be their home, a family member’s home, a residential care facility or even a nursing home. There are also inpatient hospice facilities available for those who cannot stay at home. They want to have their needs met, and their pain managed by caring professionals. They also want support for themselves and their family. Hospice care focuses on support for the patient and their family. That support can be physical, emotional, spiritual or all three. Each person is different, and his or her needs are different. Services can include home visits, medical supplies and equipment, medication education for patient and family, related medications and telephone assistance, among others.

Palliative care manages pain and reduces symptoms associated with the terminal illness. It is another alternative for those who have chosen to Forgo Curative Care. Team members can include physicians, nurse practitioners, CNAs, therapists, social workers, clergy, trained volunteers and even family members. Family members often receive education on the medications used to manage pain and how to disburse those medications. Supports here can include medical services, grooming and personal care, spiritual and psycho-social support and bereavement support to family members. A hospital setting is appropriate for those who want to continue with curative care, but is not appropriate for those who want to forgo that type of care and finish their days pain-free and comfortable. If you or a loved one are ready to make those decisions and need support, find a local hospice provider to help you set up the care and services you need. Visit Us for more information.
