Why It Is Important to Keep Holocaust Survivor Stories Alive

by | Mar 1, 2022 | Careers And Education

The Holocaust was one of the most cold blooded and systematic expressions of evil in modern times. Since then, the scale and efficiency with which the genocide took place has not been replicated. In fact, it seems that large-scale state sponsored genocide is a thing of the past. However, this is not the case. The real potential for such events is always present. This is a major reason as to why it’s so important to keep Holocaust survivor stories alive. These voices of the past serve as a harsh but potent reminder to keep the global public alert to the possibility of a repeat of such events.

History Can Become Inaccurate Over Time

Although a historical event or occurrence may be remembered years, decades and even centuries into the future after it occurred, without the continual studying and teaching of the details of this event, inaccuracies will begin to develop in the mainstream consciousness. Although the historical and scholarly records may be intact, the population at large will begin to distort the truths of the event, unless the peoples’ stories are kept alive.

Human Kind Forgets

Sometimes there are events that are so impactful that people assume humankind will never forget said event. However, if you’re old enough, you can probably list a number of events that have occurred in your lifetime; impactful and life-changing events that are now unknown to the younger generations, even though they’re on the historical record. The same can happen with the Holocaust. Fortunately, Holocaust survivor stories help keep the record alive, vivid and relevant, which goes quite far in helping prevent it from ever occurring again.

Younger Generations Need to Understand

There is abundant beauty in this world. Unfortunately, evil also exists and thrives in a world of mis- and missing information. When younger generations begin to understand the propensity for evil that exists, they will be prepared to help prevent future destruction from occurring.
