There are numerous perils that are definitely dangerous to the alloy wheels on your car; high curbs, potholes and even careless driving on your part. Unfortunately there is little that can be done to eliminate these perils other than to leave your car in the road or to fix gutter rash as it happens.
Sooner or later every driver will curb his or her car, it is inevitable. When this happens, if the damage is not too severe it can fixed as a DIY project using readily available materials including sand paper, filler, primer and paint. Some wheels have been given a lacquer finish so you will have to apply this material as well.
Although it can be done, fixing gutter rash is a tedious job which demands both patience and luck. You need patience when you are preparing the wheel and applying the paint and you need to be lucky that the paint color you choose actually matches the paint color on the wheel.
If you take the DIY approach you are looking at better than an hour a wheel to complete the process. It starts with a heavy grit sandpaper to remove the paint and to knock down the biggest chips and dings. Once this process has been completed the remaining dings must be filled with body putty until the surface is reasonably level. Once the putty has dried it is time for the real hard part, sanding the putty down until the wheel rim is flush all the way around.
Once you are happy with the finish, clean the dust with a tack cloth and apply an acid-etch primer, not only will this primer make the finished coat adhere better, it also highlights any imperfections that you missed filling and sanding; if there are any then refill the dents, sand the putty, wait again and re-prime the area.
Once the finish is as good as you can get it, follow with several coats of finish paint. This requires some skill as the paint must be applied in light coats, slowly building up the thickness. If one heavy coat is applied the paint will run.
If you did the job right you will end up with wheels that are close to the originals, the job now is to avoid having to fix gutter rash again and this probably won’t happen. The better solution is to fit the wheels with rim protectors that make the wheel look as good as new and can be replaced if necessary.
