Consider Invisalign Braces for Teens

by | Nov 8, 2016 | Dentist

Teenagers all dread the announcement they need braces. They hate the idea of getting teased by bullies because of the braces, having to deal with restrictions in the foods they can eat, and all of the frequent visits to the orthodontist that are necessary with these braces. One option is to ask the orthodontist if your teen may qualify for Invisalign Braces. There are a number of potential benefits to this alternative.

Less Visible

Invisalign braces are a lot less visible than traditional metal braces. In fact, in many cases, people won’t even notice them. This means no teasing to deal with and no self-esteem problems because of the braces.

Easy to Care for Teeth

With traditional braces, it can be hard to keep the teeth clean, and many foods are off limits. This isn’t the case with Invisalign Braces, which can be removed for eating and cleaning the teeth, so it’s just as easy to care for the teeth as it is without braces.

Treatment Time

As long as teenagers wear their Invisalign aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours each day, the treatment time is usually about the same as it would be with traditional braces. Most teenagers are actually better about wearing their aligners than adults are, so compliance isn’t usually an issue. However, just to be sure, the Invisalign aligners made for teenagers have a blue marker that fades with use so the orthodontist will be able to tell if it isn’t being worn as much as it should be.

Comfort

The brackets in traditional braces can cause sores and irritate the mouth. While any braces are going to be somewhat uncomfortable as they move the teeth gradually into the proper position, at least Invisalign aligners are less likely to cause any type of sores. Even the discomfort that is present tends to be mainly at the beginning of the period when a new aligner is started.

Cost Considerations

While it used to be the case that Invisalign aligners were more expensive than traditional braces, the prices now tend to be more in line with treatment with traditional braces.
