Measuring tension on winding and unwinding on specific types of equipment or though systems are important in many different industries. This includes in paper and textile production, in any type of spooling for materials and in the packaging industry.
With these types of applications, as well as with countless others, the ability of the tension load cell to accurately measure the force and convert it to a readable electrical output is critical. These components need to be very precise, particularly with advanced control systems, to provide the data needed to constantly adjust the tension on the web to allow for consistent winding or unwinding for the application.
Measurement Range
One of the most critical considerations with any tension load cell is the range of measurement required. While equipment always has an ideal range for the tension, there may be times when the system operates outside of these ideals.
The load cell has to be selected to accommodate for these outside of the usual range. Loads over the maximum capacity of the load cell are more likely to result in damage to the system and increased creep and inaccuracy in readings over time.
The precision required is also an important factor in ensuring the correct load cell is selected. When the cell has a wide range of weights, precision is more difficult. By narrowing down the weight range, without sacrificing on overload capacity, increased accuracy even with light tension can be maintained.
Mounting Location
The design of the tension load cell has an impact on where it can be mounted on the equipment. The ideal load cell is streamlined and compact, able to mount on the equipment either outside or inside of the frame.
This mounting consideration allows the ideal location for the load cell to provide the greatest protection from shock and damage. This extends the life of the load cell and makes it easier to install.
