What Is The Difference In A VPS And Dedicated Web Hosting Server?

by | Dec 17, 2018 | hosting

There are many different options for businesses to consider when choosing a web hosting server plan or package. Two of the most popular options for any business include a VPS or dedicated web hosting server.

With the decreasing differences in the prices of both VPS (virtual private server) as well as unmanaged dedicated web hosting server packages, they are affordable options for most businesses. However, the VPS option is the lower cost, and the unmanaged dedicated server does require a substantial understanding of server management and security.

What is VPS?

The VPS package is a cloud-based server, so it is fast, efficient and is ideal for most types of businesses. The physical server is shared by different virtual servers, but there are specific resources allotted to each virtual server. This means there is no backlog or bottleneck as can occur with a shared hosting package.

On the other hand, unlike with a shared hosting plan, the VPS web hosting server allows the owner to have all of the freedom expected with their own private server. They are free to make changes, modify the resources on the VPS and configure the server to meet their needs. The shared aspects of the VPS cannot be modified, but this is not typically a concern for most businesses.

Dedicated Servers

As the name implies, with a dedicated server the owner of the plan has full control over all aspects of the server, and there is no sharing of resources. The entire physical server is dedicated the plan owner, allowing for maximum configuration of the server.

With a managed dedicated server, the hosting company maintains the security, updates and other aspects of the server, as well as provides support and assistance. The unmanaged option does not provide all of this support, but the physical maintenance of the server is still managed by the hosting company.

Both a VPS and a dedicated server may be the right option for business. Comparing the two and understanding your comfort level in managing the server are always important in making a choice.
