Avoid Rawhide in Healthy Dog Chews for Puppies

There are a lot of products sold in pet stores that are not recommended by vets or animal nutritionists. Some of these products are imported from other countries while others are made in the United States.

Unfortunately, many new puppy owners do not understand this issue. They buy products that have the potential to cause digestive upset or more serious products for the puppies simply because they are unaware of the danger. They make the assumption that if the dog chew is sold in a pet store or a grocery store, it must be safe to use.

The Rawhide Problem

Any types of products containing rawhide should not be considered healthy dog chews for puppies or dogs of any age. Rawhide has no nutritional value and is actually a byproduct of the leather processing industry. It is only a thin inner layer of the beef hide that would be thrown out if not made into rawhide dog chews.

Imported rawhide may also contain the same inner layer of hide from slaughtered horses, and it may or may not contain chemicals used to bleach and process the rawhide before it is processed.

Rawhide does not fully digest in the stomach of a puppy or a dog. It can cause digestive blockages, digestive sensitivities and also a choking hazard if pieces break off and lodge in the throat.

The Healthy Alternative

There are healthy dog chews for puppies and dogs on the market. These are sold in retail stores throughout the United States and are clearly labeled as rawhide free or 100% rawhide free.

These healthy dog chews for puppies use real ingredients and are fortified with vitamins and minerals for healthy growth and development. They are also available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and flavors, making a great chew bone for your puppy now as well as in the future.
