There are so many terms used to describe different styles and decors that it can be incredibly difficult to differentiate between all of them. In many parts of the country, mission style doors are considered the go-to option for your room doors, closets, and even exterior doors.
The mission style of door can have several different looks, but there are features that are going to be uniform in any door of this design. In general, the mission door for the exterior of the home, or any interior door, is going to be very simplistic in design, but still extremely elegant, balanced, and harmonious with the home or room.
Wood Takes Center Stage
The one feature that you can count on with traditional types of mission doors, also known as mission shaker style doors, is that the wood itself is highlighted. These doors may be characterized by actual plank types of styles running longitudinally down the door, or they can be more classic panel types of doors.
Traditionally, mission style doors are stained, not painted. Still, there are beautiful examples of these types of doors that are painted, and that do go beyond what the original styles offered. They are typically the central focus of the entry, and are carefully selected to match the frame shapes and designs of windows that are on the home. The heavier molding and framing around the doors really adds to the design, and makes the door look solid and secure without appearing intimidating or unwelcoming.
Side lights and Transoms
Not all mission style doors feature, or need, transoms or slidelights. However, for larger front entry ways, these additional elements to the door are perfect to let in light in and give an open, welcoming appearance. This can be a great balance to the more solid and closed look that a traditional mission door may present.
Mission doors can be single or double, and they can have panels that feature the traditional board look as well as two, four, or six window panels in the top half of the door. A very traditional look to mission doors is the arched top with wrought iron accents and hardware, which is very popular with the Spanish style of home design.
There are many different types of mission style doors for you home. If you are looking for a classic, solid looking door that is stylish and very versatile, then the mission style door is definitely worth your consideration.
