Sicily is a big island. It’s one of the largest regions in Italy so if you want to tour the whole region, make sure you set aside enough time. Prepare to spend a week or so going around. If two to three days is all the time you have, though, it’ll be better if you focus on a specific locale.

- Go by plane if you want to get to Sicily from other cities. Or hire a driver–if you haven’t got a license–to get you from Rome Civitavecchia to Sicily. You could also try the sleeping car if you’re determined to see as much of the country as possible by train. Sleeping cars can make the trip a little more comfortable for you.
- Choose your airport. Palermo and Catania are the two main airports while Trapani Birgi and Comiso are smaller. If you’re set on a trip for the western part of Sicily, then go to Palermo or Trapani. For the eastern area, bop over to Catania. And for a trip down to southeastern locales, go to Comiso, suggests Italy Magazine.
- Know the weather. If you’re there for the beach, then July and August are the busiest times of the year, though people often go from June to September. If you make your trip at any other time, you’ll have to prepare yourself to take a quick dip in cold waters, if you’re determined to get the perfect beach shot or just consign yourself to getting sunset shots over the horizon.
- Get a private tour. If you want to travel conveniently, sans the stress and worry of having to make the right transfers, of being late for the train or getting lost, then hire a travel agency. - Use cash. In Italy, cash is the easiest and most accepted form of payment. If your bill is under ten euros, then a credit card likely won’t be accepted. So it’s best to have cash handy for small purchases.
