Taking Care of Your Contact Lenses Is Important for Good Eye Care

by | Apr 10, 2014 | Eye Care

Good eye care begins with taking care of your contact lenses. The type of contact lense you have will play a huge role in how you need to take care of them. Some contact lenses are designed to be disposed of after just one day, while other contact lenses are made to last an entire month or even an entire year.

Regardless of which type of lense you have, the most important thing to do is to wash your hands before inserting and removing your contact lenses. Be sure to rinse your hands entirely, so there is no soap residue left that can sting your eyes. Dry your hands with a lint-free cloth to avoid getting particles in your eyes.

Keeping your fingernails clean and cut short can reduce your risks of accidentally scratching the surface of your eyes as you insert and remove your lenses. Additionally, you’ll want to be sure that your fingernails have no jagged edges that can irritate your eyes.

Make sure you rinse the lenses with good quality lens care cleaner from your optometrist at the Eye Care Center in Inver Grove Heights in MN. Insert your contacts into your contact lens container. You’ll need to be sure to place your left lens into the side marked ‘L’, and the right lens in the side marked ‘R’. That way, you can avoid getting the lenses mixed up the next morning when you reinsert the lenses into your eyes.

Depending on the type of contact lenses you have, you may need to use enzyme cleaner once a week. Generally, these are lenses that can be used for one month or longer. Be sure to follow the guidelines given to you by the eye care center in Grove Heights MN for your specific brand and type of contact lenses.

If you feel discomfort upon inserting one of your contact lenses, or at any time during the day, remove it promptly. Examine the lens to see if it has any debris or any tears. Contact your optometrist if your eye becomes painful, red or swollen, and if you notice any tears or spots on your lenses that cannot be cleaned.
