The American agricultural business of the 21st Century is mostly automated. This makes it much easier for the owner and the consumer. More goods can be taken to market and the quality of the foods we consume today is very high, thanks to the benefits of automation. However, today’s farms may have to deal with issues like tractor loader hydraulic cylinders and a wide range of other equipment. Knowing how your hydraulic systems operate can help you avoid a lot of problems in the future. Let’s take a closer look at hydraulics on the farm today, to give you a better understanding.
A Basic Hydraulic System
Hydraulics is all about the power of pressurized fluids. This fluid is pumped through the system to achieve a specific type of work. Here are basic components you may encounter:
* Fluid reservoir – fluid stored here is not under pressure. This helps to eliminate bubbles of air in the hydraulic system.
* Pump – sends fluid throughout the system
* Various valves – can prevent, release or redirect fluid.
* Hydraulic fluid – the basic component and is petroleum or synthetic based.
* Hoses
* Hydraulic cylinders
* Fittings
Filters or filtration system – this is a vital component because it keeps impurities out of the fluid. Impurities can cause corrosion and excessive wear on tractor loader hydraulic cylinders and many other types of equipment.
How is Fluid Pressurized?
A pump sends fluid to a hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder contains a piston, piston rod and fluid port(s) for hydraulic fluid to enter and exit the cylinder. As fluid enters, it is compressed by the piston and then sent to the hydraulic components in the system.
Valves
Fluid constantly enters and leaves the cylinder and flows throughout the system. However, special valves are required to direct fluid flow to the right component at the right time. Valves can either change the flow of fluid or release pressure. A pressure relief valve is a failsafe mechanism which keeps pressure in the system from becoming too great, because this can damage equipment. They also keep pressure regulated for applications like tractor loader hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors.
Maintenance
It’s important to maintain your agribusiness equipment and perform routine checks before each use. When checking out each unit, look for signs of fluid leakage, as this can mean there is something wrong. Also, make sure to change the fluid and filters at intervals recommended by the manufacturer.
