What are dentures?

Dentures, often called false teeth are dental prosthetics that are used to replace natural teeth when they are no longer present. Dentures in Fall River can become necessary when time, wear and tear take their toll on natural teeth or the teeth are removed as the result of an accident. It used to be that dentures were plates that fit over the gums; these plates were removed for cleaning. Today false teeth can actually be set into the gums, this procedure is known as a dental implant and although the tooth or teeth are false, the process is very different to traditional dentures.

Dentures go way back in history, archeological evidence indicates that false teeth have been around since 700 BC or even earlier. These early teeth were made from animal bone or ivory and although very rough compared to the standards of today, did allow people to somewhat enjoy the benefits of teeth once it became necessary to remove all their natural teeth. Although it may seem macabre, diseased teeth were pulled and replaced by teeth taken from a recently deceased individual, hoping they would take to the gums and jaw bone.

It was not until the 20th century that dentures in Fall River became quite sophisticated. It was at this time when taking impressions of a patient oral cavity started, this of course allows dentures to be made which were an exact fit for both the upper and lower teeth. These dentures, often called plates, began to take on the appearance of natural teeth. As the techniques progressed and improved by mid century dentists were producing dentures that were hard to distinguish from natural teeth.

In the past perhaps dentures were complete, either upper or lower and people still tend to think of them as a completely manufactured set of teeth. This however is not always the case; although there most certainly is a full denture, there are also partials dentures; partials are used when there is a gap where several teeth are missing. In most cases the partial denture connects with existing teeth, they are designed to clip to teeth either side of the gap.

The objective of a denture is to come as close as possible to duplicating the looks of natural teeth. Today, dentures make use of materials such as porcelain and synthetic resins which can hold their appearance for many years as well as holding up to the wear and tear placed on any teeth.
