What is a Precision Machine Shop?

by | Sep 14, 2023 | Industrial Goods and Services

Today’s industries that require a high number of specialized parts to create sophisticated products that handle complex functions rely on a process known as CNC (“Computer Numerical Control”) machining. It involves a computer program that controls the machinery needed to refine the metal or other material into whatever specifications and dimensions are required. These machines are essential to the creation of specialized parts and products in high quantities; this process would not be possible without these machines. Another critical part of the process is precision machine shops; learn more about what these shops are below.

Precision Machine Shop: What It Does

A precision machine shop is a place utilizing CNC equipment to turn raw supplies and materials into components that have exact specifications and dimensions needed for tools and products required in today’s industries. The CNC machine uses instructions and a computer program to control the machinery to create the material in the exact form and specifications the material needs to be in for the tools and products that are to be made later in the process.

How Parts and Products Come Into Being From Raw Material

The CNC machine gets the image of the final product and the cutting tool required to create that product through a Computer Aided Manufacturing model and a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software image. The raw material is strapped right onto the machine, while the machine is calibrated so it can direct the cutting work needed to form the material into the exact required specifications. Any changes needed beforehand are implemented before the software program is activated. Once the program is activated, the machine directs the cutting tool to cut the material down to the required specifications. When it is done, the workpiece is removed from the machine.
