What Mechanics Evaluate When You Have Them Inspect a Used Car

Your credit looks good, you’ve got your financing lined up and you have a down payment for a car. You’ve toured most of the dealerships in town except the nearby used Chevy dealership in Illinois. There, you find an automobile you like, but your mechanic couldn’t accompany you. You can still look the car over before you buy it. Look for these things.

The Body

With your eyes beside the car, look down the length of the auto. There should be no dents. Bounce on the trunk to check the suspension. It shouldn’t give too much. There should be no rust. The paint job shouldn’t look mismatched. Run your fingers around the exhaust. The presence of oil means an engine problem.

Now check the tires. The tread shouldn’t be worn. Insert a nickel into the tread. The tread should cover the head of President Jefferson.

Open the hood, trunk and doors. They should open and close fluidly. If you smell a musty smell, that means water damage.

Under The Hood

The belts and hoses should have no cracks or be frayed. Take out the oil dipstick. There should be oil in the engine. Check the automatic transmission fluid while the car is running. The dipstick should be red. Check the brake and steering fluids, too. The used Chevy dealership in Illinois should have filled all these up already.

Turn the engine over and test drive the car. You should hear no squeaks, squeals, or thumping. The car should steer well and not pull to one side. That means misalignment. The brakes should stop the car. Use the windscreen wipers, check that the lights work as do the turn signals. Make sure the mirrors adjust and the windows roll down.
