Which Industrial Gas Burners Are Right For Your Business?

If you are in an industry that needs Industrial Gas Burners, it is self evident that the nature of your business either requires you to heat something up to a higher temperature; or you need to burn something. It can also be assumed that you have decided, for whatever reason, that you will get your results from burning gas (as against burning a liquid or solid fuel – even though you might still need an Industrial Gas Burner to ignite your solid fuel each time you start up).

Selecting Your Fuel Is The First Step In Selecting Your Burner

There are several types of gas that you can select to be your fuel; the original gas fuels were a by-product from good old fashioned coal during the coking process. The gas was produced in dedicated manufactured gas plants (MGP) known as gasworks.

This was often referred to as “coal gas” (alternatively “town, illumination, or water” gas). It was a mixture of flammable gases which included methane, hydrogen and carbon monoxide, together with small quantities of non-flammable gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Like all fuels, gas requires additional air to provide sufficient oxygen for combustion. The purpose of a good Industrial Gas Burner is to add air to the gas in a manner that best supports full combustion of the gas.

Until the wide spread introduction of natural gas in the 1940’s and 1950’s, manufactured gas was used for cooking, heating and street or domestic lighting. It was supplied to industry and households alike through piped distribution systems that were usually municipally owned.

Although “good” in its day, coal gas had a tendency to burn with a smoky flame because of incomplete combustion and impurities; it also had a relatively low calorific value (the amount of heat available from a fuel); typically around 440 BTUH/ft3.

Today’s natural gases, such as propane, are around the 2,500 BTUH/ft3 level and have largely replaced the manufactured gases; but, different gases require different air to gas ratios, pressures and flow rates. This is why it is so necessary for you to select an Industrial Gas Burner that is not only best for your particular application but is also the correct one for the gas you are using.
